Kids today are more impressive. AI changed the game anyway.

Students right now are doing things at seventeen that used to take people a full career to accomplish. They're smarter, more driven, and better at standing out than any class before them. And now everyone has AI in their pocket, so essays come out polished in seconds.

Here's the thing nobody tells parents: it doesn't work. I read thousands of essays a season when I was on the other side of this. You develop an instinct for what's real and what isn't, and AI-written language has a flatness to it. Readers catch it fast. Therefore in most cases, it doesn't survive the first pass.

So while half the industry chases productivity, pumping out essays in a matter of hours, we do something else entirely. We hire writers from the exact institutions your kid is applying to. They didn't study the culture of these campuses from the outside. They lived it. Walked the quads. Sat in the dining halls. Know exactly what a school like this is looking for, because not long ago, they were the ones it picked.

The result of this shows up on the page as “fit,” the kind an admissions officer feels by the end of the first paragraph, the kind that makes a reader sit up a little straighter. Everyone else treats “fit” like some vague, unteachable instinct. We turned it into something real. Something we can actually build into your essay, deliberately, on purpose. This is the part of the process nobody else can offer. It's the whole reason this company exists.

Why I'm still doing this

I've watched higher education change a kid's life more times than I can count. A school isn't just a name on paper. It's the room you walk into, the people you meet, the doors that open before you even know they exist.

Every student deserves that shot.

I've spent over twenty years on almost every side of college admissions. I worked as a college counselor. I sat on an admissions committee and read thousands of applications a season, deciding in a few minutes whose story got a second look. And I'm a parent of two kids who went through this exact same process. I've watched the anxiety up close, from my own dining table.

That mix of experience is unusual. It's also why I have very strong opinions about how this process should actually work.

In 2018, my co-founder Jesse and I started Amplitude Admissions out of Stamford, Connecticut. Back then, most of our students came from New England boarding schools and the high schools right around us. Then COVID hit in 2020, and like everyone else in this industry, we had no choice but to move online.

It turned out to be the best thing that could've happened to us. Suddenly we weren't limited to families who could drive to our office. We could work with students anywhere in the world. Since then, we've grown from a two-person operation into a team of fifteen.
